Beauty and Power in the Great Lakes

Many people can’t fathom how truly massive the Great Lakes are. They look like the ocean with water as far as the eye can see, but are different in the cadence of the waves. The lakeshore is filled with colorful stones, sugary sand, and driftwood. Constantly changing temperatures, lake levels, and crashing waves create an endless opportunity for treasure hunting.

This past year as the water levels reached a 100-year high, I started seeing a new kind of driftwood on the shores. Beautiful, curving, twisted sticks appeared everywhere. I realized they were the roots of trees that had been felled by waves.
